If you want the children in your classroom to learn then you have to keep them engaged. Unfortunately, the material doesn’t always hold students’ attention on its own so you need to do more. Here are 5 surefire tips to keep the children in your classroom engaged and to make learning more fun for everyone.
Show Your Interest
Children take their cues from you. This is true for all people really but you have to keep this in mind especially when you teach. You need to show your interest and passion in the subject at hand. If the material seems to bore you then what are the chances that your students will find it interesting? Your positive attitude and passion will rub off on students.
Use Multiple Mediums
You don’t want to always teach using one method. You don’t want to always have students reading out of textbooks or listening to you talk. Changing it up allows for a feeling of variety even when students are just sitting in their chairs learning for long periods of time. Keep using textbooks but also use pictures and diagrams. Show videos and use props. Students like a little variety in life too.
Involve Them
Passive learning is fine sometimes but you want to involve students in the material as often as possible. Have discussions. Ask students what they think and what interests them most about whatever it is that they are studying. Let students get up and teach the rest of the class what they have learned. Just do whatever it takes to make students a part of the learning experience and not just passive receptacles of the knowledge you impart.
Understand Learning Styles
Mixing up the ways that you teach is essential but also realize that doing so randomly will leave some students out of the mix. You want to figure out how the children in your classroom learn best and attempt to cater to their unique learning styles. You will not be able to cater every lesson to every student but knowing how students learn best will help you to do your best to make sure that no child is left behind.
Make It Fun
This is what it comes down to. Just make learning fun. You may not be able to please all of your students all of the time but your efforts to make learning enjoyable and engaging will not be lost on students.
And when you make sure that learning is fun, don’t forget yourself. If you are having fun then that will increase the chances that your students are having fun too. Either way, you having fun will make learning better for everyone involved.
These are 5 surefire tips for keeping children in your classroom engaged. Doing this will take some effort but the rewards are readily apparent. Children want to care about and enjoy what they do every day. Just give them some good reasons to have fun and you will keep them engaged.
